Anatomy of the Body-in-Motion

Students learn to locate and identify the principle muscles, bones and connective tissues and their roles in movement and support. This is an active course using movement demos and exploration, video viewing and palpation.
As text we use The Anatomy Coloring Book by W. Kapit and L. Elson, 3rd edition. San
Francisco: Benjamin Cummings, 2002. This is an excellent first course; students who have
previously studied anatomy may use this course as a review.

Myofascial Integration

A hands-on treatment approach to soft tissue pain using body movement, manual
techniques and observation. The myofascia is the fibrous covering of a muscle and the surrounding tissues that support, separate and guide muscles in their actions. If the fascia is damaged or dysfunctional, the associated muscles will be limited in their ability to support and move the body.

What skills are developed in MFI training?

Practitioners who complete the training and clinical supervision acquire skills in:
  • Observation and analysis of body movement and tissue dysfunction
  • Manual skills to normalize fascia, reduce pain and restore neuromuscular function
  • Using movement to integrate change and correct movement patterns

What topics are covered in the training?

  • Fundamentals in Rehabilitation: Bartenieff Fundamentals applied in the practice of rehabilitation; choosing a Fundamental sequence to address a particular problem teaching and modifying it as needed.
  • Postural Muscle Assessment and Stretching: A complete stretching concept and method and application of Dr. Vladimir Janda’s postural/phasic muscle theory.
  • Working with Fascia: a three-day course to teach the basics of soft tissue release and repair on oneself and on clients.
  • Muscles in Patterned Action: six essential movement patterns, their facilitation and correction based on the work of Dr. Vladimir Janda.
  • Clinical Applications in Myofascial Integration: the final course in the series brings together the skills learned to teach a complete assessment and treatment planning process.

Prerequisites for the certificate course

A working knowledge of anatomy and an introductory course in Bartenieff Fundamentals of Movementsm. Assignments, clinical supervision hours and an examination complete the certification program. CMAs may take the certificate course to fulfill the 100-hour ISMETA upgrade requirement.

Bartenieff Fundamentals of MovementSM

If you want to be able to move better on two feet, improve your posture and explore new possibilities for a more active lifestyle, this course is for you. There are no prerequisites but you must actively participate. A course manual is included.

You will learn to:
  • increase your body awareness and coordination
  • improve your basic movement skills
  • enjoy the benefits of a new way to warm-up and prepare yourself for activities.

Irmgard Bartenieff (1900 – 1981), a student of Rudolf Laban, was a brilliant physical therapist, dance therapist and teacher. She founded the Laban / Bartenieff Institute of Movement StudiesSM in New York City where she trained hundreds of students to see and experience movement from a unique point of view. These fundamentals are her creation.

Other courses in Fundamentals are available for interested groups: Bartenieff Fundamentals Level II, Fundamentals in Rehabilitation and Teacher Training in Fundamentals.

Train the trainer in 3-D WORKOUT™

Learn to teach 3-D WORKOUT™, a unique conditioning and coordination program developed by Dr. Woodruff to restore and maintain the body for life. This integrated approach is proprioceptively enriched to improve balance, grounding and body awareness. Exercises in three-dimensions use all the joint functions within a given exercise.

Here is an opportunity:
  • to increase your skill set and earning potential
  • be the first on the block with a new product supported by
  • professionally produced videos
  • to offer a new service in a market that is always open to innovation
  • to offer your poorly-coordinated clients a fresh, mindful approach to becoming a mover and acquiring the tools for life-long fitness.

Three-weekend course content:

1) 3-D Body Integration: principles of Bartenieff Fundamentals of Movementsm applied to fitness—body organization and body intelligence. Structure of a class; modifying the sequences; cueing and correcting.

2) Weight training in three dimensions: language and principles of movement in the kinesphere: planes, dimensions, directions. Applications for resistance exercises; oads, reps, sequence development; teaching and modifying the exercises. 3-D Resistance Training syllabus.

3) Stretching: teaching and learning safe, effective self-stretches including 3-D Back Stretch; positioning and cueing for targeting the correct muscles. 3-D WORKOUT™ Stretching syllabus.

A course manual and DVD is included. A working knowledge of human anatomy is a prerequisite.

Limitations: non-CMAs who study this material may fulfill the requirements of a prerequisite course in Bartenieff Fundamentals of Movementsm as offered by the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies. No certification (CMA) is intended by or implied through this training course in 3-D WORKOUT™.
